Hicksville considers projects for redeveloping downtown

Hicksville developers and planners have suggested 23 projects to revitalize the city’s downtown, a number of efforts that would cost approximately $230m or more.

Ten million is already available, thanks to a state grant; now backers of the efforts are vying to have their projects chosen to receive some of the funding.

Among those with proposals for redevelopment was Cecil Bakalor of HKS Architects PC, who recently spoke at the Hicksville Community Center. Bakalor said his firm was concentrating on efforts that would help ease traffic snarls, encourage the development of mixed-use projects, and create more open space. Some of the improvements would take place near the Long Island Rail Road station in Hicksville, where concrete and pavement could become green space, with trees lining the streets.

The most significant new development would be on West Barclay Street, where a mixed-use development would place retail shops at street level, apartments above them, and parking garages to the rear. The entire project would comprise approximately 500,000 square feet. In addition, four other parking garages were proposed, at a cost of $106m, to come from private sources, the town, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

The public is invited to attend the planning committee on February 15, 2018. Events like this can flourish if organizers use a flyer printing company to create an agenda for attendees.
