Funds approved for Hicksville garage

In an effort to find and repair several problems, the Oyster Bay Town Board recently voted to spend $432,000 on the parking garage that sits near the Long Island Rail Road station in Hicksville.

Since its opening in 2011, the garage has been beset with issues. The structure, which cost $35m and offers 1,440 parking spaces, has cracks in the ceiling, water leaks, pieces of concrete dropping onto parked cars, and elevators that are often out of service

In March, crews installed what are called ‘screw jacks’ – metal supports to hold up the ceilings of the underground levels of the garage. Some of the funds approved are to continue this effort. Another $300,000 will be used mainly to design garage repairs, while some will be used for further analysis of the structure, according to Richard Lenz, commissioner of public works.

Other funds will be used to conduct a “peer review” of the work that's already been completed on the garage. The review will be handled by Hirani Engineering of Jericho, and Future Tech Consultants, based in Mineola. The firms will test the concrete in the garage, and investigate why it is cracking. Lenz said the review will take time, but he wants to ensure everything is done correctly. He also notes that earlier tests confirmed it is safe to keep using the garage.

In situations like this, officials can work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for area residents, explaining the issues.
