Nassau County has a new destination for theater lovers, now that the Cultural Arts Playhouse (CAP) has opened a main stage in Syosset, about five miles from Hicksville.
The CAP, which has been in existence for 20 years, has spent a lot of its time over the past eight years helping young performers develop their skills. However, according to artistic director and owner Bruce Grossman, the company wanted to return to presenting major productions, and felt Syosset would be a good location to reestablish the CAP brand.
The organization opened its new season with ‘Hairspray’, a musical production based on the John Waters film of the same name, to an enthusiastic audience.
The company has made its home in several other locations before settling on Syosset, where it built its new playhouse virtually from scratch. Led by Tony Frangipane, resident director, and Grossman, the CAP raised over $600,000 and used the money to create a theater from a bare space comprising 9,000 square feet. The main theater features sloped, stadium-style seating, and there is also a small “black box” theater the company can use for acting classes, and large dressing rooms.
‘Hairspray’ runs through February 21, with performances at 8:00 pm Friday and Saturday nights, and matinees at 3:00 pm Sundays. The company might like to work with a poster printing company to create eye-catching items to publicize the show.
