Hewlett area workshop to forage for fungi
The cool and damp days of autumn means mushrooms will be popping up in Hewlett green spaces, and budding foragers have been offered seats in a fungi identification class.
The New York Botanical Garden supplies the public with a variety of ways of learning about both botany and mycology, and it will be running a workshop series that will explore edible mushrooms. It will be led by a forager with many years of experience, and methods of harvesting sustainably and ethically will be taught.
The learners can expect to find species such as hen of the woods, oyster and honey mushrooms, all of which tend to be easy to identify without confusing them with a toxic variety, such as amanita. The series is limited to those aged18 and up, and it will be offered on a hands-on basis, consisting of two sessions spaced a week apart.
Knowing how to properly identify a plant or fungi is an important skill for a forager to have. Simple identification guides and other publications for events like this one can be provided by area stationery printers.
This opportunity to learn the basics of forging for edible fungi will be kicking off on September 14th, and it will wrap up on September 24th. Everyone who registers will meet up at the New York Botanical Garden before they head out.
