A four-week class series will introduce American Sign Language (ASL) to the registrants in a Wall Township activity in early June.
Anyone age 10 and up that would like to get started when it comes to sign language is encouraged to register for the workshops, and both residents and non-residents are welcome. Diana Meade will be the instructor. She has over 20 years of experience teaching the language, and is hearing impaired herself.
Attendees will learn the basics of the language, including how to fingerspell the alphabet. Simple courtesy phrases will be taught, and everyone will walk away with a better understanding of its grammar and structure, which may be different from what they are used to with spoken and written English. Each week will see instruction provided in new vocabulary, and the installments will all run for one and half hours.
Providing an opportunity for the public to pick up the basics of sign language can benefit both them and the hearing impaired members of their community. Educational event organizers can order a variety of learning materials for a class or workshop from area Stationery printers.
This introduction to the basics of sign language will start on Monday, June 2 at the Wall Township Municipal Craft Room, running from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Anyone who would like to register can find a link on the Township’s website.
