For seniors in Wall Township, NJ, on June 19, it looked like rain right up until the moment the students were to walk out onto the football field. At the last moment, however, the clouds parted and the seniors graduated in sunshine.
The graduation ceremony this year centered on courage, as student speeches, from the welcome address to the valedictorian, spoke about transitioning from high school into the next steps of their lives.
The welcome address, given by Artemis Tapliga, suggested that members of the class have enough courage to confront their fears and admit to their failures. Tapliga suggested that students should never let fear of failure dictate their thoughts and actions, and that they need to realize that only they can decide their fates.
Salutatorian Erin Dixson’s message also focused around a courage theme. She suggested that courage does not always have to mean standing up for someone or fighting back. She felt that the foundation of courage comes from having the strength to be an individual.
Valedictorian Samantha Kossey reflected on the time the students spent in high school, as well as their accomplishments, and also touched on Eleanor Roosevelt’s famous statement that she was who she was today because of choices she made yesterday.
Many parents bring cameras to take pictures of graduations, hoping for one good enough to send out to the rest of the family in postcard printing or graduation announcements.
