Secaucus residents will soon be able to ice skate on a rink fit for a professional hockey team.
The Secaucus Ice Rink, which was renovated at a cost of $2.1m, should be reopening for business very soon. Work on the project began in the middle of October, and should be complete by January 15.
The renovations were carried out by Minervini Vandermark Architecture of Hoboken, with Anthony Vandermark as the architect on the project. Vandermark believes the renovations will make the rink both better and more efficient for taxpayers, since it will now be possible to get the ice ready for skating in a single day. The renovations will enable the rink to remain open until June.
Remodeling included installing 23 miles of what is known as “chiller piping” underneath the rink's sub-surface. The system will pump glycol, the chemical that keeps ice frozen, under the rink. Using the new system means that it is only necessary for the rink to have a one-inch layer of ice for skaters, rather than the 14 inches needed now, which will result in lower operating costs.
