Wool Days demonstrations to get the area spinning

With the spring days getting warmer, it will soon be time for the Monmouth County Historical Association to invite Manalapan locals to its Wool Days, offering an afternoon of free demonstrations and hands-on experiences for both the young and old.

Up first, at Historic Longstreet Farm, Gene Sheninger will be demonstrating his collies’ expertise at herding sheep. Afterwards, visitors can watch the sheep being sheared.

Later on, visitors can take a ride in a hay wagon over to Holmes Hendrickson House to watch the staff demonstrate spinning and weaving skills that date back to colonial times. Demonstrations will include a professional at work on a large walking spinning wheel. Attendees will also get an opportunity experience, hands-on, the art of carding and spinning wool. Visitors should bring a camera, since photos of the day’s activities should provide excellent material for poster printing.

Since parking is somewhat limited at the Holmes Hendrickson House, the association advises visitors to use the parking lot at Longstreet Farm. A wagon service will shuttle everyone back and forth to and from the Holmes Hendrickson House. However, in case of rain, the ride will not be available.

The Wool Days events will be held Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at Holmes Hendrickson House, 62 Longstreet Road, Holmdel.
