Manalapan goes back in time

Those in Manalapan that enjoy local history may want to go to the upcoming 15th annual Spirit of the Jerseys History Far. Over 95 exhibitors will be there.

Historical societies, committees, commissions, theatres and associations from around the state will be taking part in the festivities. Military historical groups centered on the armed forces, battlegrounds, battleships, WWII cavalry, militia and artillery will have displays and many will also have reenactments.

Some special features will include The Sea Dogs -pirates singing shanties and sea songs, 18th century ice cream making, Lenape foodways demonstrations, medicine show and flying flea circus, and lectures on New Jersey’s Dollar Princesses. Monmouth Furnace and Hoboken baseball clubs in vintage uniforms will be playing baseball using rules from the 1800’s. Linda Russell and her group will be singing WWII songs and Vince Turner will present “Span Time”- a full day of radio as it was presented to the military from the Vietnam War time back to WWII.

Historical figures will meet and greet the crowd. Some of these will include George Washington, Molly Pitcher, Hercules – George Washington’s slave chef, Walt Whitman and Amelia Earhart. Vendors will be onsite selling their summer food specialties and hawking merchandise.

Teachers are encouraged to take their classes to this event. They usually take pictures on fieldtrips such as this and have local Print shops make duplicates for the kids.

The festivities will be at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, September 14th from 11 am until 5:00 pm.
