Locals to learn about American Realism

Manalapan art lovers will have a chance to learn more about American painters next week.

A pair of amateur self-taught art historians will be giving a seminar, focusing on American Realism.

While European painters have traditionally received the bulk of press, especially those described as masters during the Renaissance, America has produced its share of highly talented artists as well. For those interested in learning more about out artistic heritage, Fred Dixon and his wife Martha will be giving a presentation outlining their studies of American art, most specifically focusing on realism. The pair will discuss their collection, gathered over the past 35 years, and their experiences at several museums in the U.S. and Europe.

The Dixons will also give a talk focused on eight American artists – Eakins, Homer, Glackens, Henri, Bellows, Hopper, Wyeth, and Rockwell – and the unique style each managed to convey through their work. The speakers will also offer images of examples of the work of each, along with commentary. Those planning to attend may wish to bring their own Brochures or other material to add to the discussion.

The free presentation will be given Tuesday, October 20, at 6:30 pm at Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan. Discounted Copies of Fred’s book will also be available for those who wish to have it on their bookshelves.
