What's Happening in Manalapan, NJ…

Library to delve into doo-wop

The Monmouth County Library free concert series in Manalapan is going to be hosting a couple of programs about the music genre doo-wop over the next few days.

Popular on street corners during the 1950s, the first program takes place today and will be an introduction to the music, its history and the people who created it. The second session will be a performance.

First up, a presentation of the people, music, and history of doo-wop will be presented by John Ench, who has taught classes about the genre at Rutgers University and Brookdale Community College. He will discuss the music and also give some behind-the-scenes stories of the songs and groups who performed them.

The second part of the series will feature The New Dimensions Band and Singers, who will be presenting a doo-wop concert. Singers Kristal, Marilyn, and Linda will be blending harmonies on songs from the doo-wop era, such as ‘Why Do Fools Fall in Love?’ made famous by Diana Ross, as well as ‘Soldier Boy’ and ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow?’, both of which were originally sung by the Shirelles.

The discussion will be today, July 24, at 2:00 pm, and the concert will be Wednesday, July 30, 7:30 pm at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters. No doubt organizers will have placed flyer printing orders to advertise the event.
