Hohokus gets math boost

The Hohokus Library is attempting to give local parents a hand in helping their youngsters with its latest workshop.

Making Math Magical is a two-hour discussion designed to aid parents in ending ‘math freakout.’

The seminar will be led by Rebecca Zook. Graduating from Boston University, Zook brings over 13 years of experience in one-on-one math tutoring. Accoridng to her website, her seven-step Math Mastery program has been consistently praised by parents as making a huge impact on their children’s math learning.

The seminar will begin with a presentation of the tools needed to encourage confidence in math, including a discussion of the difference between mastery and perfectionism, how to cultivate a growth mindset, how negative emotions can be used to help achieve math success, how to help children get into a ‘flow state’ (a state between being bored and overwhelmed), and other tips to increase math confidence and understanding. Afterwards, Zook will open the workshop up for questions, so participants will be able to discuss specific needs they might have. Booklet printing techniques will be used to provide case studies and tips to participants.

Making Math Magical will take place on May 16 from 6:45 pm to 8:00 pm at the Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library, located at 91 Warren Ave. Participation is free but registration is required. For more information, contact the library directly.
