Local cyclists raise money to fight cancer

Cycling enthusiasts have raised thousands of dollars for local oncology departments at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton and Capital Health Medical Centre in Hopewell through a combination of cycle races and fundraising benefits, and this year’s October 1 even continued the trend.

‘Riders for a Cause’ is the brainchild of Phil Practico Jr. and has only been active for three years. In that time, local cyclists have enjoyed a series of biking challenges and raised a considerable amount of money too, coming in at just over £100,000 so far.

Enjoyed by an ever increasing number, cycling is growing in popularity and this is reflected in club membership, which currently stands at 137 riders. The volunteers and organisers are always keen to ensure that any races are accessible to riders of all abilities; for example, the latest fundraiser had two categories. One was a 50-mile race with a climb of 3,500ft geared to more experienced riders, and the other spanned 25 miles with a 1,400ft climb.

The club motto “local riders, cancer fighters” is apt too as, according to Practico:

“Half of the people involved have cancer or have lost someone to cancer. We find there are more people affected by cancer than anything else.”

With more fundraising promised, the club may benefit from flyer printing as a way to advertise its next event.
