Hamilton area brushes up on recycling

Although they might recycle empty bottles and cans, many people do not think of a second life for their used plastic toothbrushes. TerraCycle, a recycling company based in Trenton, next to Hamilton, is seeking to change that.

The company is sponsoring a contest that encourages schools to send in dental waste for recycling. In exchange, participating schools will have the chance to win a new playground, which will be made out of recycled toothbrushes and other oral care products.

TerraCycle is partnering with Colgate and Shoprite for the contest for the fourth year in a row.

Companies that sponsor contests can use Mailing services to inform people and organizations of the rules of the challenge.

Schools that decide to participate in the Recycled Playground Challenge will be given one Playground Credit for every 0.2lb of dental waste they send in. Empty toothpaste containers, dental floss containers, and old toothbrushes all count towards the challenge. In addition to sending in waste, schools can earn credits by having people vote for them online at TerraCycle's website.

The school that earns the most Playground Credits will be the winner, and the challenge is open to schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Connecticut, and New York. The winner last year was the BelovED Community Charter School in Jersey City.

Schools have until June 30 to earn credits.
