Caldwell goes birdwatching

For all Caldwell winter birdwatchers, two birding walks will be taking place this month.

First up is one at Riker Hill and Becker Farm, which is coming in a few days, while Weequahic Park will host another at the end of February.

Associate Naturalist, Dave Hall will lead a hike through old farm fields and along scenic Watchung Ridge at Riker Hill Art Park this Saturday, February 13, from 8:30 am until 11:00 am. He will be focusing on grassland birds.

Hall will also be taking a group on a leisurely stroll around the Weequahic Park’s 80-acre lake looking for wintering songbirds, gulls, and ducks and early harbingers of spring at the Weequahic Park Winter Birding Walk.

Caldwell Guests are to meet at the lake’s south side in the large parking area. In order to do this, cars must enter at the Empire and Meeker streets entrance.

The excursions will be designed for walkers over 11 years old, and will have information about the birds that spend winter here in Essex County. Hall will encourage the newbie, as well as challenge local birding experts.

Photographers often take their cameras along with them on these walks. Pictures taken of colorful, energetic winter fowl found along the route are often taken to local Stationery printers to be made into Letterheads and note cards.

The Weequahic Park Winter Birding Walk will take place Thursday, February 25 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at Weequahic Park in Newark.
