A partnership between the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the South Carolina Department of Transportation will enable two welcome centers to be renovated, with construction beginning in the upcoming months and lasting for about a year.
One is on Interstate 77 in Fort Mill just over the border from Pineville, and the other is along Interstate 95 in Hardeeville.
According to the director of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Duane Parrish, the cost for renovating the two welcome centers will be $4m and will provide a more “human touch” by using more up-to-date technology. Some of this technology will include touchscreen tablets with Google Maps for the staff so that they can plan routes to destinations in the state. As smartphones are now carried by many drivers, these staff members will then be able to send a planned route directly to an email address or a cellphone number.
Parrish added that welcome centers are important for travelers so the technology will be upgraded to reflect that importance.
In Fort Mill, there is a current facility between Gold Hill Road and Carowinds Blvd., and the new welcome center will be built just next to it.
