A new public art installation is travelling throughout the city of Concord.
Three Rider Transit buses have been painted featuring original artwork by Mayanthi Jayawardena of Serendib Creative, Liz Haywood, and Natalie Robinson, all artists based in North Carolina. Jayawardena is a multidisciplinary muralist who creates vibrant, community-centered artwork that explores cultural identity, storytelling, and connection. Robinson is a traveling muralist who specializes in vibrant experiences in public spaces that spark connection, curiosity, and joy. Haywood is a public artist and muralist known for her colorful and bold artwork that brings energy to shared spaces.
This project is the latest one from the City of Concord Public Art Commission. Its goal is to inspire connection and creativity through public art that can be displayed throughout the city.
Three designs were selected by the Commission after a call went out to artists earlier this year. These designs celebrated the culture and rich history of the city and were to be featured on the buses of Rider Transit. A unique perspective is brought by each artist with the artwork focused on resilience, connection, community, and the people who help make the city what it is.
The three Rider Transit buses wrapped in this art will be circulating for about three years. This will provide residents with the chance to experience the artwork as part of their everyday commute.
