Eli Lilly and Co. has broken ground on a new campus in Concord on the former location of the Phillips Morris facility.
The pharmaceutical manufacturer will be investing $1bn in this new campus, which will have five buildings and 800,000 square feet of space. It will create close to 600 jobs for the company and 500 construction jobs.
This campus in Concord is the second major investment of Eli Lilly in recent years in North Carolina. The company is currently building a large manufacturing facility in Research Triangle Park, which will create over 460 jobs, Production there is expected to begin next year.
David Ricks, CEO of Eli Lilly, said that it is expected that the average salary will be around $100,000 a year, matching that at the campus in Indiana. He added that the jobs are high-tech manufacturing positions requiring technical skills and leadership, and some of them are engineering jobs. Many of such positions often require business card printing services.
Chairman of the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners, Steve Morris, said the work to be done at the plant will be a collaborative effort. Morris added that there is much to celebrate with this new community-focused plant.
If all goes to plan, the company expects the plant to be fully operational in 2024.
