Amazon will begin operations in Concord this week and, come January, will begin hiring the 150 to 200 people it anticipates needing.
The giant online retailer announced its intentions to occupy 222,500 square feet of space at the Concord Airport Business Park this last September. Workers are in the process of putting the finishing touches needed for Amazon to move in; contractually the Silverman Group is supposed to have the space available for occupancy by December 1.
It has not been made public how many employees will move in right away, and the company is not planning on having a formal grand opening. This will be Amazon’s first distribution center in the state. According to Concord Mayor Scott Padgett, when operations here are in full swing, there might be as many as 300 people employed.
Acquiring new employees means a Print company will likely be called upon to provide business card printing services for the executives and much of the office personal, while all employees will likely be issued handbooks.
In an effort to reduce shipping distance, and gain more control over the process, Amazon has made the commitment to open more than a dozen “sortation centers” across the country. By locating these centers near medium-sized markets, the online retail company anticipates it will save costs while being able to expand its same-day shipping options.
