Defense company to build special vehicles in Concord

A building of General Motors (GM) is currently undergoing renovations in Concord.

The building which is on Fortune Ave. NW at the International Business Park in Concord will enable production of a military trooper carrier. To be known as an Infantry Squad Vehicle, the vehicle is an agile and light troop carrier for all terrains that can carry an infantry squad of nine soldiers. It is architected like the Chevrolet Colorado midsize truck for 2020 and will be small enough to fit inside a Chinook helicopter, and sufficiently light so that it can be sling loaded from a Blackhawk helicopter.

The project will be part of a new tech center GM is creating in Concord. The renovated facility will span 75,000 square feet, located fewer than 10 miles from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. It is expected that the tech center will recruit employees for GM from the talented workforce in the area. Local Print shops may be able to assist those interested in such positions with resumé printing services.

GM Defense LLC, a subsidiary of General Motors, was awarded a contract of $200m for the project. GM purchased the property in December of last year for close to $11m. The vehicles produced there will be given to the United States Army and are scheduled to be delivered in April.
