Opera announces schedule for 24th season
Union Avenue Opera (UAO) presents operatic works in their original language, and has done so for over 20 years. The organization recently announced the three works it will present this summer.
‘H.M.S. Pinafore’ is a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta about Seaman Ralph Rackstraw, who has fallen in love with Josephine, the captain's daughter. It seems the young man has no chance to win his lady, but this is a comic opera, full of laughs, mistaken identity, and intrigue, and after suitable complications, Ralph and Josephine are married. The operetta will be sung in English, with English supertitles.
‘Nabucco’ is a classic opera by Giuseppe Verdi, and is the story of two women, Fenena and Abigaille, her half-sister. The two are daughters of Nabucco, King of Babylon, and love the same man. Abigaille offers to save his people if he will love her. When he refuses, she begins plotting. This opera features one of Verdi's most well-known choral melodies, ‘Va, Pensiero’, and will be presented in Italian with English supertitles.
The last show is ‘Lost in the Stars’ by Kurt Weill, and is a look at Apartheid in South Africa. The work is based on the book ‘Cry, the Beloved Country’, and is heartbreaking but uplifting as well. It will be sung in English with English supertitles shown.
The Festival Season begins July 6. Organizations like this can work with a poster printing company, which can create colorful posters to advertise each production.
