WIC continues in St. Charles County

According to a press release, the well-known Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program will continue next year in St. Charles County, which includes Maryland Heights.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services approved the WIC contract renewal from the Department of Community Health and the Environment of the county.

Women with lower incomes who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or having postnatal issues, as well as their children who are five years old or younger, can get free food and education about nutrition. They can also get medical services and referrals.

With WIC, women are able to go to the doctor during early stages of pregnancy and can eat better while expecting. Foods given to WIC participants are high in calcium, protein, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C. These include eggs, milk, fruits, vegetables, wholegrain foods, and juice. Women who do not breastfeed can get formula for their child too.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds the program, while the state supervises its use. A family applying for WIC must live in Missouri, have less than a set level of income, and a health professional must state they are at risk nutritionally.

Should the Department of Community Health and the Environment hold a counseling session for WIC participants, it could be advertised with Flyers. The Department could also have a printing company produce important nutritional information on items to give out.
