St. Charles Countys new regulations limit smoking

On November 6, St. Charles County, including residents in Maryland Heights, approved a measure that prohibits smoking inside public areas.

Halls for veteran organizations, bars, and Ameristar Casino located in St. Charles are the exception to the new rule. However, Lemay's River City Casino and Maryland Heights' Hollywood Casino will have to introduce significant non-smoking portions within their premises.

This ban is the first of its kind prohibiting smoking indoors at areas of employment and in public buildings. According to a representative of Boyd Gaming, which owns Ameristar, there are some non-smoking floors but they are not familiar with how many. Any establishments that prohibit individuals under the age of 21 are also exempt from the new indoor smoking regulations.

Restaurants will be able to have smoking areas that are physically apart from areas that are nonsmoking. There are other details that allow retail tobacco businesses and cigar bars to have smoking areas since, they prohibit individuals under the age of 18.

Other towns and districts in St. Charles County many have ideas of creating stricter regulations in the same way that Lake Saint Louis and O'Fallon have. Techniques such as professional flyer printing, and using Flyers as Signs around non-smoking areas, will help spread the word that smoking is no longer allowed in certain areas of premises.
