On October 26, employees of the Maryland Heights grocery store Schnuck Markets Inc. negotiated a contract for their union, preventing a strike.
Just under 70% of Schnuck Markets Inc employees who are part of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655 voted in favor of the three-year deal. The union's most recent contract ended in early May.
The union rejected the previous version of the contract last month at a meeting in St. Charles' Family Arena where nearly 90% were in attendance. One of the deciding factors of the new contract was the increased healthcare benefits, as the rejected contract took away health insurance to part-time employees.
David Cook, president of the union, admitted that not everything came out in the union's favor but says members are in a better position now than they were before the agreement. Cook urged members to reach an agreement quickly to avoid the occurrence of a strike before the end of the month. Had there been no agreement between Schnucks and the union, a strike would have started within as little as five days.
According to Cook, one of the crucial components of the successful negotiations was Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service deputy director Scot Beckenbaugh.
A printing company could Print the contract terms for union members to refer back to now that they have been agreed.
