Renovations planned near Mississippi River

Several local water areas are getting makeovers.

According to officials, St. Charles County, which includes Maryland Heights, will renovate the old Riverside Harbor next to the Mississippi River in the winter.

As part of a project sure to require poster and brochure printing, it will put in a pavilion, new docks and boat ramp, an aquatic play area, restrooms, campsites, and a launch space for kayaks.

The Parks Department acquired the land, which spans nearly eight acres, two months ago for $411,000. The land was two properties owned by Angela and Mathew Murphy in addition to Catherine and Raymond Trautman. The department hopes that the space will motivate residents to spend time outdoors. They can fish, canoe, and boat in Alton Lake and Dardenne Creek. Once plans for the renovations are approved, the department hopes to open the park next year. Currently, there are no numbers for construction and material costs for the project.

Before renovations begin, Riverside Landing will open for the summer. Renovations will take place for next year's season opening. According to Steve Ehlmann, the executive for the county, officials thought about a kayak launch in association with St. Peters in Lakeside Park, which is two miles from Riverside Landing. It also wants to connect St. Charles trails and the Boschert Greenway in order to combine aquatic and land activities.
