Funding the McKelvey Road community center will put Maryland Height's annual budget at its highest ever level in 2015.
On December 4, city representatives agreed on spending over $70m next year. The $28m needed to fund the center will come from the city's reserves. Some of the funds will have to come from utility taxes and sales tax, but the good news for employees of Maryland Heights is that they are to receive a raise of 2% for the second year in succession.
City finance director David Watson says that none of the city's services will be affected, but if the city proposes more large projects like the community center in the future, there is a possibility that sales tax will have to increase. Sales tax in Maryland Heights is one of the lowest in the St. Louis area at just over 7.5%, but city residents may not be willing to allow the probable half-cent increase that other cities are proposing.
The city may decide to send out a letter explaining the 2015 budget to residents using an official letterhead. Letterhead printing companies can produce a professional design and will use high quality paper to Print the letters.
Construction on the community center will begin early next year, and the project is expected to be finished by the end of 2016.Get a Free Quote for Print
