Last Sunday in Maryland Heights, two firefighters rescued a woman on icy roads without an ambulance.
The winter weather in the area on Sunday made the roads perilous. According to firefighter Shaylor Taetz, he had just arrived in work when he got a call that a bus had slid on the highway. He and another firefighter left immediately to Interstate 270 but had to travel slow since the roads were slippery, and the ambulance they were driving itself got into an accident as a result. At that point, they abandoned the ambulance and got to the driver of the stranded bus, who was the only one in the vehicle.
The roads were getting worse, so the firefighters made the decision to place the woman in a gurney and walk to the Health DePaul Hospital, a hilly journey of around a mile. Taetz said the duo had to improvise and do the best they could with limited resources.
The unusual journey attracted several onlookers, and the firefighters covered the woman so she was not exposed to the storm. According to KDSK.com, she did not suffer any major injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
News like this makes for an interesting subject for newsletter or flyer printing, while also showing that first responders often have to make out-of-the-box decisions in order to help people in need.
