The police of St. Charles hosted a session to education the public about the department earlier this month.
The community supports the police department but the yearly open house may improve the relationship further, hopes St. Charles police chief Randy McKinley.
Maryland Heights is part of the St. Charles metropolitan area and often requires the help of its police department. McKinley hopes afterward, residents will feel more confident in their police force. The helicopter flew in, SWAT was in attendance, and the mounted patrol made an appearance. Attendees saw a display of the department's history with speed guns, fingerprinting kits, and other tools the department has used in the past. The display also included those who lost their lives on the force.
Dan Allen, officer for the K-9 unit, brought his dog Nitro to the open house, stating that he is a friendly animal who follows commands. Along with helping to catch suspects, he knows how to identify drugs, track people, and searching various locations.
Officers taught attendees about how to identify drugs, which younger children could have their face painted or get a balloon animal. According to Lieutenant Tom Wilkison, children should have positive interactions with the police and feel safe around them. The goal is for them to seek out the police if they are in trouble.
