Maryland Heights area considers alcohol sale restrictions

Next week, there will be a meeting in nearby St. Charles to discuss a proposal on alcohol sales. If approved, Main Street bars in the historic part of town will not be able to sell alcohol after 11:00 pm.

Dave Beckering wrote the proposal, which would forbid establishments to sell alcohol after 11pm until 6am the next morning every day. However, the bars from Jefferson Street to Clark Street downtown are the only places affected by the restriction.

According to Diana Neigel, owner of Lloyd and Harry's for the past two years, the ordinance would badly affect her bar, and would make her regret her decision to move to the location. Several establishment owners in the area feel the same way. Big A's owner Tom Lloyd said the ordinance is rash because there have been no alcohol-related incidents in three decades.

The mayor wants Historic Downtown Main Street to be more family friendly. Despite the lack of safety issues in the area, News 4 has commented on measures to increase safety in the district, with local police using both undercover and uniformed officials to patrol and monitor goings-on.

Should the proposal pass, flyer printing would come in handy to let patrons know when they cannot buy alcohol, perhaps updating people from nearby Maryland Heights who may venture into the area in evenings.
