Emergency center opens in St. Charles County

St. Charles County has opened an operations center for emergencies in O'Fallon. The center will serve everywhere in the county, including Maryland Heights.

All of the first responder staff will reside in the $24m center during a disaster. According to Steve Ehlmann, executive of St. Charles County, the Gateway Greenlight system can help first responders assess the situation while in the state-of-the-art facility. Gateway Greenlight is a system of cameras, which are located in various areas of the county.

Residents deserve a county that is well prepared for an emergency, says Ehlmann. He assures that the county has the current technology. The center at TR Hughes Boulevard totals 30,000 square feet and is right next to a police station.

House communications for emergencies are also a part of the facility, including a P25 digital radio system and an evolved 911 telephone operation. The idea is to make responses more efficient and better coordinated.

This Saturday, September 22, there will be tours of the emergency center and an open house for the St. Charles County Police Department.

It is important to know what to do in an emergency situation as a citizen. Brochures can give detailed instructions on various disasters and how to stay safe. Often, officials from new facilities will provide those for the county through a brochure printing company.
