Construction will soon begin on a project to build two walkways in St. Charles, near Maryland Heights.
The community learned about the plans through an open house earlier this month, and the pedestrian bridges will go over highways 94 and 364. According to Great Rivers Greenway community program manager Elizabeth Simons, the community expressed concern over not being able to cross the roads as a pedestrian or cyclist four years ago.
Officials have planned to lengthen the 2.2-mile-long Centennial Greenway, which links the Katy Trail State Park and Heritage Park. It will run from St. Charles over the Missouri River and into Forest Park once finished. A rest stop will sit between the two roads and will be landscaped with plants from the area.
Simons commented via St. Louis Public Radio that Greenways is key to keeping the area lively, adding that further development of Greenways helps everyone get in touch with the natural area and linked communities. The Greenway connects the community to their favorite places and lets them discover others.
Federal grants will pay for $1m of the nearly $5m cost of the bridges, sales tax from the area will cover the rest. Construction should wrap up by 2018.
