Blues hoping to keep players in final years of contract

The St. Louis Blues, who now have a new training facility in Maryland Heights, are hoping to secure key players Brayden Schenn and Alex Pietrangelo for the next season.

Both hockey players will be unlimited free agents if the team does not extend their contract in time. They were a part of the Blues' win against the Boston Bruins over seven games last year, which won them the Stanley Cup. It was the first time the team had won the Cup in their history.

Doug Armstrong, general manager of the Blues, talked to Schenn and Pietrangelo about their future plans and expressed his desire to keep them on the roster. He believes both players want to stay but it will take compromise on both sides for that to happen.

Armstrong has several years of experience negotiating contracts and says that while he would like to get a deal sorted, both the team and the players will find a solution one way or the other. Professional sports teams often have poster printing redone to reflect a new roster when players leave.

Pietrangelo, 29, is in his final year of his contract lasting seven years. In the NHL Draft in 2008, he was the number 4 pick. Within 71 games in the season, he had 28 assists and 13 goals for a total of 41 points.

The Philadelphia Flyers secured the services of Schenn two years ago but his contract with the team is also in its last year. The 28-year-old had 37 assists and 17 goals last season for a total of 54 points.
