New tax rates to be implemented

School taxes in Eden Prairie will be going up slightly less than the residents expected.

Most of the money for schooling in Eden Prairie comes from state funding. The state has not kept its level of funding at par with the level of inflation since 2003. The Eden Prairie City Council covers the deficit with money from property taxes. Jason Mutzenberger, who is the executive director of business services in the district, stated how:

“For our district, that means about $6 million of revenue per year that we would need to keep up with inflation. Obviously, that would do wonders for us from a financial standpoint and it would lessen the burden on taxpayers."

Homes in Eden Prairie valued at more than $250,000 will see their tax bills increase to $1,029 in 2020. According to estimates given by the district, the final levies from both the school board and the city council are less than what had previously been proposed by about 0.3% each. A $400,000 household will expect to pay about $1,694 in 2020. Such information is often circulated using flyer printing in affected areas.

The school tax rate in Eden Prairie will go up by less than city taxes will. A levy of 3.26% was approved by the area’s school board and the city’s tax levy stands at 3.4%. In comparison, neighboring Hennepin County will see an increase of 4.57%.
