Friends of Eden Prairie Parks will hold the Invasive Species Removal event in a local park this October to tackle the ever-growing problem of buckthorn in the region.
Buckthorn is a non-native invasive plant species that was introduced to North America from Europe as a hedging material. The plant species soon grew to be highly invasive, crowding out native species with its dense thickets. Friends of Eden Prarie Parks leads volunteer groups to help with the removal of this plant from various local parks and woodland areas across the region.
The removal event next month will take place at Miller Park, which is a waterfront park located along the shores of Mitchell Lake. Those attending the event are instructed to meet at the boat launch parking lot. Attendees are welcome to bring their favorite buckthorn removal tool, such as reciprocating saws and electric pruners, but chainsaws are not allowed. Organizers will also have a limited number of loppers and pruning saws to borrow.
