Families challenged to reduce their waste

Residents from Eden Prairie are being challenged to take part in the Zero Waste Challenge.

The Zero Waste Challenge is open to people who live all over Hennepin County. The City of Eden Prairie is hoping that its residents will be among the 50 households that will take part in this eight-month challenge. The goal of this challenge is to get families and households to take a closer look at the items that they purchase and connect them to the volume of waste that is produced. Households that make conscious buying decisions in this manner are more likely to recycle and find innovative ways to reduce their waste.

The households that will be participating in the challenge will be tasked with tracking how much trash they produce, how much of it is recycled, and analyzing how much food waste there is. At the end of the challenge, each household will take a look at how much they were able to reduce their waste by.

Throughout the challenge, households will receive professional coaching and access to workshops provided by staff from Zero Waste Challenge and volunteers. The county will provide the houses with relevant supplies such as compostable Bags and scales so that they can weigh their waste. Plastics and other items that are recyclable sometimes carry a Logo Design resembling a triangle of arrows to represent this.

The Zero Waste Challenge will be running from the middle of September 2020 until May 2021. Those looking to apply can do so online, and must sign up by Monday, September 7.
