Parts of Riverview Road have been closed because of flooding caused by rising water levels in the Minnesota River.
The part of the Eden Prairie road that has been closed stretches for almost a mile from Hennepin Town Road to Parker Drive. Local officials used a combination of poster printing, press releases, and new road Signs to inform residents about the closure. The new signs are posted at Hennepin Town Road and the entrance to Pioneer Trail.
Riverview Road was officially closed off on March 22. Officials were hopeful that the closure would only last for a week, but the river’s flooding was greater than expected and the road has remained closed indefinitely. The city reopened Riverview Road to traffic on April 17, but it had to be closed again 36 hours later.
The city is not taking any chances and will keep the road closed until it is certain that it is safe to use. Officials have to wait for the water to go down, and then inspect the road and pavement for any water damage before attempting to open it again.
Flooding in the Minnesota River was caused by a combination of melting snow and heavy rainfall in March. Numerous other roads had to be closed in areas such as Chaska and Minnetrista. A mobile home community in Jordan was completely flooded out and its residents were forced to evacuate.
