The SolSmart program has awarded Eden Prairie with a Gold designation for its efforts in making it easier for the local community to implement solar power solutions.
SolSmart is a national program which is run by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), and The Solar Foundation. Funding for SolSmart’s projects comes from the US Department of Solar Energy Technologies Office. The program itself is staffed with teams of the nation’s best experts that provide communities with free technical assistance that will help them improve their solar power production and up their ratings. Every city is eligible to be a part of the SolSmart program.
A big part of the reason that Eden Prairie achieved Gold designation was its participation in several events designed to improve the uptake of sustainable energy solutions. These events include the Midwest Renewable Energy Association Solar Power Hours, Excel Energy’s Partners in Energy, and the Minnesota Brightfields Initiative. Events like these are great places for people involved in solar power production to meet and exchange Business Cards.
The City of Eden Prairie has also taken strides to remove legal restrictions around the development of photovoltaic power cells and pushed for new ordnances which promote the use of solar energy accessories in the entire area.
The City’s website is also updated with information so residents and businesses can go about installing and financing their own solar power projects. The website also has advice on the legal requirements for any permits that might be needed.
