Each summer, volunteers are asked to help improve Heritage Park. The first day has already come and gone, but there is still time to take part.
Volunteer Days are hosted each month by the Farmington Hills Nature Center. During these events, volunteers from the community take part in such activities as planting wildflowers and native trees, collecting seeds, removing invasive plants, and helping to maintain the Nature Center building, and the trails in the park.
People of every age and skill level are welcome to take part in the clean-up efforts, and there is no need to register in advance. All a volunteer needs to do is attend the Nature Center on the day they want to work. The only exception is if a group of ten or more is interested, then they should call ahead. Flyer printing may be used to inform people of activities like this.
Heritage Park covers 211 acres, and offers trails that wind for 4.5 miles through the area. They are suitable both for nature study and hiking, and in the winter, they are perfect for cross-country skiing. The park also includes a picnic area, six horseshoe pits, in-ground grills, a playground, a splash pad, and more.
The remaining Volunteer Days are this Saturday, July 20, and again on August 17. Work begins at 10:00 am and finishes at 12:00 noon. Complete information about the volunteer opportunities on specific dates is available from the Nature Center, at 248-477-1135.
