Robertson Brothers Homes has plans to invest millions of dollars in demolishing and then redeveloping what used to be a school at 33000 Thomas Street. The redevelopment project aims to transform the area, with 53 townhomes to be accompanied by a charming small park.
Since 2015, the Maxfield Training Center has remained unoccupied, and the ownership of the building was transferred to Farmington in 2020.
Last month, the city council conducted a vote, with a 4-1 majority in favor, to endorse a purchase agreement made with Robertson Brothers. During the voting process, Mayor Pro Tem Joe LaRussa stood as the sole dissenter. In an interview with Hometown Life, he explained that his "no" vote stemmed from developers' refusal to incorporate underground power lines and their excessive requests for extensions. In 2021, the council assessed proposals from four different developers and ultimately decided to proceed with Robertson Brothers' plans.
Despite this argument, Mayor Sara Bowman expressed her belief that the project would have a "transformational" impact on the small city.
