Attendees of the upcoming Greater Farmington Founders Festival will have a chance to learn the technique of ‘hands-only CPR’ from members of the cities' Emergency Preparedness Commission, as well as local firefighters.
Hands-only CPR does not require the use of mouth-to-mouth breathing. Instead, it consists of three simple steps: either call 911 or have someone else do it, put the person on a hard surface, and push quickly and firmly in the center of the victim's chest. Studies have found that hands-only CPR is as effective as the traditional method.
In addition to learning a lifesaving method of resuscitation, festival goers can shop for crafts at the marketplace, enjoy live music, and have fun with friends and family. The festival is set up in various venues such as Riley Park and the Warner Mansion, with kids' activities centered in the park.
The festival kicks off officially today (July 16), but things really start up the next day, with hot air balloon rides in the evening, a movie, bingo, and a coloring contest. Saturday brings a fireworks show, and Sunday features a raffle.
The CPR demonstrations are slated to take place at the Farmington Hills Fire Department's festival booth in downtown Farmington, from July 17 to 19.
The fire department could work with a banner printing company to create a sturdy banner to identify their booth.
