The last thing people want to do when they are caught up in an emergency is discuss safety, or the kinds of services provided by firefighters, which is why Farmington Hills Fire Department will be providing this type of information to residents at an upcoming open house.
According to department spokesman James Neufeld, the open house will enable the department to reach out to the community in a non-emergency setting, and explain the services they provide and how they operate. The event is open to the public and will include demonstrations and hands-on activities. One of the demonstrations will be conducted by firefighters, who will light a kitchen grease fire and demonstrate how to safely put it out.
The main focus of this year's event is on smoke alarms, according to Fire Lieutenant Larry Gauthier. The department plans on distributing information about them. Free alarms, as well as free installations, will be made available to any Farmington Hills resident who asks for one. The department will also provide free home inspections for residents who want to know if their home is safe from fire.
The open house is slated for October 10 at the Fire Department, 31455 West 11 Mile Road, from 3:00 pm to to 7:00 pm. The fire department could work with a banner printing company to create a banner to hang over the fire house door, welcoming community members.
