A piece of antebellum and Civil War history is coming to an area near Reisterstown next month, offering area residents and history enthusiasts an opportunity to relive it.
The Underground Railroad Commemorative Walk at Emmarts is preparing to welcome visitors who wish to learn more about and walk portions of the famed escape route for enslaved people seeking asylum. The walk will begin at a local church that was used as a safe house during the Underground Railroad’s peak.
The walk will be used to kick off the area’s Black History Month celebrations in Baltimore County. Attendees will discover more about the history while also learning the necessary steps to become an advocate for others and Emmarts.
The proceeds from donations made by participants will be used to fund future historic events. Poster printing is an informative and colorful way to promote such events through community outreach.
Interested parties, including friends, family members, sororities, and fraternities, are encouraged to form groups for the walk. Groups are also welcome to create a banner to walk behind. Walkers are asked to arrive a half-hour before the walk begins to get organized and prepared.
The walk will start at Emmarts United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 1, at 10:00 AM. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather. Participation is free, but donations are appreciated to help fund future events.
