New bar and beer garden to take over Patrick's

Patrick’s of Pruitt Street in Baltimore has been closed since 2016, but if all goes well, a new bar and beer garden will take over the space.

Two of the Elephant's bartenders, Lara Sumerson and Mike Cavanagh, bought the Patrick's space, as well as an adjacent courtyard and neighboring property, and hope to open the Back Yard in the spring.

According to Sumerson, she and Cavanagh will use the neighboring property, which is a “shell” at the moment, to extend the bar and also create a path to access the courtyard. They plan to hold classes about wine and other events on the second floor. Sumerson added that the former pub is perfect for them, and they can create the establishment they want without making any compromises.

The two have expertise in different areas, which will help them develop their bar. Sumerson is an expert on cocktails and beer, while Cavanagh is a wine connoisseur, and will be responsible for selecting the wines they carry. They plan to offer 18 beers on tap, all of them from local brewers, with the exception of Guinness, which they will carry in honor of Patrick's.

Although Back Yard will not have full meal service, they will offer flatbreads, paninis, and charcuterie.
