Free shuttle buses take over for subway

Part of the Baltimore Metro subway is closed for repairs, but commuters can still get to their destinations, thanks to the Maryland Department of Transportation.

The department has teamed up with National Express in order to supply express and local bus shuttle service between Mondawmin Station and Milford Mill Station south. The shuttles are free.

The shuttles will run seven days a week, 24 hours a day, with buses scheduled to arrive about every 10 minutes during peak travel times. During off-hours, the buses will run only about every 20-30 minutes. The local shuttle buses will stop at each subway station between Mondawmin and Milford Mill that is being closed for repairs. The express shuttles will run between the two endpoints without making any stops.

The shuttles are on loan from National Express, which, along with the MTA, will have personnel available to help commuters find and board the correct buses.

Baltimore Metro is 33 years old. The service between Mondawmin and Milford Mill stations was stopped July 22 as part of a $16m repair project. Crews will replace worn out rails, install devices to help trains switch tracks, and clean. The subway carries approximately 45,000 people daily on average. Normal service is scheduled to resume August 14.

Agencies like these can benefit by working with flyer printing companies that can create handouts to help provide information for patrons in these situations.
