Up to Date Laundry, a firm that offers laundry services for doctors' scrubs, sheets, and other linen used by major healthcare providers in the area, plans to open a new facility next summer in East Baltimore.
The firm currently employs more than 400 people in its plant in West Baltimore, and is planning to hire another 400 employees for the new location, which will comprise about 80,000 square feet.
The company is 70 years old, and is planning to double in size when its Hollander Business Park facility opens next year. As part of the expansion, the company says it will hire about 100 employees with various skills the first year, and add 300 more over the next five years.
The president of Up to Date, Mark Carter, said the company has a great relationship with the city, which is been good to it. Expanding into East Baltimore will bring jobs to an area that needs the work, which in turn is a way of showing the city how much Up to Date appreciates Baltimore's support, he says.
It is expected that the new plant will increase Up to Date's annual capacity to handle laundry by 72 million pounds. This, in turn, will shorten the time its clients, which include MedStar Health and Johns Hopkins Health, have to wait for fresh linen.
Companies like these can disseminate job information by working with postcard printing companies, which can create cards for area-wide mailings.
