Baltimore greets holidays in European style

A beloved Christmas tradition is returning to Baltimore.

For many, one of the joys of traveling in Europe at Christmas is the opening of holiday markets throughout the continent, particularly in Germany. Christmas Village, which will be held in Baltimore, recreates this experience.

The market is modeled on the one in Nuremberg, Germany, known as the Christkindl Market. The event will be held both indoors and outdoors, at West Shore Park at the Inner Harbor. There will be over 50 booths where vendors will sell traditional European treats, including drinks, candy, sweets, and food. Others will offer shoppers a chance to browse for holiday gifts including jewelry, ornaments, and art and craft items. A large heated tent will allow shoppers to look over the vendors' wares in comfort.

The market will be officially opened by the Christkind, who will come from Nuremberg to give the traditional prologue. The Christkind is a young woman who represents the spirit of Christmas, and is analogous to Santa Claus. She has long blonde hair, a golden crown, and wears a white dress spangled with gold stars.

There is a preview of the market on November 21 and November 22, and it opens officially on November 26 and runs through December 24. The Christkind will give the prologue on November 28. Flyer printing can be used to provide handouts to visitors to help them find specific locations at events like this.
