Willow was used by indigenous people for many purposes, one of which was to make baskets. An upcoming workshop in the Richmond area will bring this practice into the 21st Century.
Instructor Jennifer Zurick will be leading an introduction to the art and science of weaving using black willow bark. This strong, flexible material can be woven into durable baskets and other containers. The attendees will be walked through the weaving process, right from preparing the materials for use by removing the outer bark layer.
The group will learn how to get the materials ready for weaving, and once this step is complete, they will begin constructing a small basket. They will be taught how to harvest bark sustainably, and everyone can choose the design they wish to create. Cordage making, border design, and twining techniques are also on the agenda. All materials will be supplied, and lunch is also included in the $850 registration fee.
This class is open to both new and experienced weavers alike. Sheets that provide tips for caring for a finished craft product will help keep it looking great for a long time to come. These can be prepared by Stationery printers.
The Woodworking School at Pine Croft in Brea has scheduled this willow weaving workshop for Sunday, October 13. It will begin at 9:00 am.
