Parents in Richmond might need to schedule a checkup with their children's physician soon.
The state of Kentucky recently updated its vaccination requirements for school-aged children.
The revision to the regulation now requires that every child enrolled in school in Kentucky receives two doses of the vaccine against Hepatitis A. Students over the age of 16 are also required to have at least two doses of the vaccine against meningitis.
The new rules go into effect for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. Any student who is currently enrolled, or who will be by the fall of this year, needs to receive the updated vaccinations. The regulations apply to students in the public schools, private schools, preschool programs, daycare centers, and family care homes.
Additionally, students who are homeschooled but who want to participate in sports or other extracurricular activities at either a public or private school, will need to be up to date on their immunizations.
States that change their immunization requirements can use flyer printing to let parents know of the change and provide them with additional resources for information.
In Madison County, which includes Richmond, students will need to have received at least one dose of each vaccination by the beginning of the school year. The second dose should be received within six months of the first. The district will be forwarding a letter to parents explaining the new regulations.
