Minority students who plan on attended Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond now have a new opportunity to help them pay for school.
During a Diversity Day, the university announced the New Horizons Minority Scholarship, which intends to help minority students afford school. The merit-based scholarship looks at a student's academic success, leadership, participation in school groups and community organizations, and letters of recommendation.
To be eligible, an incoming freshman student needs to have had a grade point average in high school of at least 2.75. Students also need ACT composite scores of 20 or higher, or equivalent SAT scores.
Although it is a merit scholarship, eligible students also need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and fill out a Dr. Rodney Gross Scholars application. The application gives students a chance to showcase any extracurricular activities in which they are involved, and any leadership roles they have taken on.
The school can use newsletter printing to announce the recipients of the scholarship. The amounts of the scholarship will vary, though some students might be eligible for the full cost of in-state tuition. The number available depends on the amount of funding received. Students chosen for the scholarship can renew their award for up to eight semesters, as long as they maintain a GPA of at least 2.5.
The deadline to apply for an award for the Fall 2016 semester is March 1.
