The race is named in honor of Daniel Ellis, a fallen police officer. This year's race, the second annual event, is going to take place on the day that Officer Ellis would have turned 35. Last year’s race took place in March, when the weather was considerably colder than is expected this time round.
In excess of 1,200 runners still showed up for the 5k, despite the cold. So far, more than 550 runners have signed up to race, which is similar to the number registered at the same time last year, according to Kate Ellis, the widow of Officer Ellis. Speaking to the Richmond Register, Kate stated that she hoped for better weather during this year's race, saying:
“Our hope is to get as many people out there to have fun and celebrate the memory of Daniel on his birthday.”
Organizers of races and other events can use flyer printing to encourage people to sign up and to get the word out about their scheduled events.
Along with celebrating the memory of the police officer, the race also seeks to raise money for the foundation named for him. Last year's event brought in nearly $55,000, $11,000 of which went to various programs in Madison County. The goal for this year's race is to raise about $60,000.
The 5K will start at 8:30 am on April 22, at the Richmond Centre. Registration costs $35, which includes a T-shirt and snacks.
